BAPTISM At St. John's we welcome anyone that desires to be baptized. Member baptisms may be scheduled during our Thursday Evening Worship at 6:45 pm and Sunday Morning Worship at 9:00 am. Non-members need to schedule baptisms following the church service at the discretion of the Senior Pastor. We asked that baptisms be scheduled at least two weeks prior. Once you have a date or two in mind we ask that you call the church office at 920-452-5296 to confirm the availability. If you are interested in being baptized at St. John's, please click on the PDF Baptism Form. What is Baptism? Baptism is a Sacrament of our church, that is a Sacred act (a moment set aside for my relationship with God) instituted by Jesus Christ (Matt 28:10) that offers for forgiveness of sins and strengthening of faith to all who partake. Baptism is the property of God and is entrusted to the Christian Church to be offered to any and all who ask for it. What does Baptism Signify? Baptism signifies God's love for this person. The of baptism is the beginning of new life of discipleship with Christ. For infants and children, baptism is the sign that they are taken into the care of the Christian Church. Why is water used? God works through ordinary experiences, events and substances. As water is an essential element in our lives, it is an essential element in baptism. In baptism we a cleansed and purified by the water for a new life in Christ. Some churches in the United Church of Christ sprinkle the water, some pour and some do immersion, at St. John's we sprinkle a small amount of water on the forehead of the person being baptized. Are sponsors required? Parents may choose sponsors or godparents for infants and young children to be baptized. Historically, godparents were to make sure the child was raised in the Christian faith in the event of the death of the parents. At the time of the baptism the sponsors are asked to accompany the candidates and present them for baptism, and make similar promises parents make to help the person grow in faith and discipleship. When baptized in a service of worship, the congregation promises to act as additional sponsors to uphold the parents and sponsors in fulfillment of their vows and to provide for all children full opportunities for Christian growth and nurture. For this reason, we only allow members to conduct baptisms during the service, if a child is not going to attend St. John's, the congregation cannot fulfill this promise.
